Violence has once again disrupted the peace in New York City with two fatal shootings occurring in Manhattan and Bronx on Sunday, leaving the local communities in distress. The NYPD reported that 39-year-old Gibson Winters was fatally shot early in the morning, near West 46th Street and 12th Avenue in Hell’s Kitchen, an event that ended with him being pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Morningside Hospital. The motive behind the shooting remains under investigation, as the police have yet to provide a description of a possible suspect, the Gothamist reports.
Later the same day, at around 8 p.m., another shooting took place in Morris Heights. A 24-year-old man, now identified by the authorities as Randy Blanche of The Bronx, suffered multiple gunshot wounds to his head outside a residential building at 160 West 174th St and was later declared dead at BronxCare Hospital. In response to this incident, NYPD sources have said that multiple individuals are presently in custody and are expected to be charged soon, as indicated by Bronx News12.
These shootings have stirred NYPD to action, especially with no arrests having been made in connection to Winters’s death by Monday morning. NYPD data shows homicides and shootings in Winters's precinct have remained relatively unchanged from last year. However, the area where Blanche was slain has seen a marked decrease in such violent crimes, with homicides plummeting and shootings dropping by more than 50% compared to the previous year, as per NYPD figures shared by the Gothamist.
Witnesses at the Morris Heights scene captured video footage of multiple women being handcuffed and placed into police vehicles, triggering speculation about the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Investigations are currently ongoing, with police working diligently to piece together the events that led to these tragic outcomes. The identity of the man killed in Hell’s Kitchen, was confirmed to be a resident of Crown Heights, yet no further details regarding the assailant or possible motives have been shared at this time.
