A 21-year-old Brentwood man has been charged with second-degree assault and criminal possession of a controlled substance after an 8-month-old in his care was reportedly poisoned with fentanyl. The infant was revived and treated with Narcan, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office and cited by PIX11.
Henry Martinez allegedly snorted fentanyl powder near the infant using a straw, exposing the child to the drug, Suffolk County Police Commissioner Kevin Catalina said, calling the act “truly egregious,” as reported by The Patch. reports that first responders arriving after Martinez’s 911 call found the baby in serious respiratory distress.
Henry Martinez was released to supervised release rather than the $300,000 cash or $600,000 bond initially requested by District Court Judge Eric Sachs. Martinez is set to contest the charges in court, with his next appearance scheduled for November 24. If convicted on the top charge, Martinez could face up to seven years in prison.
