Residents of Newton County should circle December 6 on their calendars, as officials prepare for the next Tire Amnesty Day, a twice-yearly initiative aimed at keeping the community clean. The program is designed to curb illegal tire dumping, a practice that can contribute to mosquito breeding, by giving residents the opportunity to drop off unwanted tires free of charge.

Officials note there are a few guidelines in place to ensure the event remains efficient and community-centered. Only Newton County residents may take part, with a limit of 10 tires per vehicle. Tires must be removed from rims, and commercial tires will not be accepted. The effort is sponsored by Keep Newton Beautiful, which continues to support programs aimed at cutting down on litter and improving the local environment, according to a statement obtained by NewtonCountyGa.gov.

In the initiative's short history, the impact is measurable. Since its inception in the fall of 2023 by the Solid Waste Authority, Newton County has held two such events every year and the numbers are telling. On June 14, during the most recent Tire Amnesty Day before the upcoming December event, the county collected an impressive 12.59 tons of tires.

Overall, Newton County residents have turned in a total of 50.84 tons of tires over the course of the four events. This is no small feat, given the environmental impact of tire waste, which, aside from being unsightly, can also pose significant health hazards by harboring pests such as mosquitoes—which are known vectors of diseases. The next event aims to build on this positive trend, aiming for an even higher collection total. For more information on the event, including specifics on the location and time, visit the Newton County website.
