Three children lost their lives in a devastating house fire in West Bloomfield Township earlier this year, but their parents will not face criminal charges, according to the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office. The house, located on the 5000 block of Pembury Lane, was engulfed by flames on Feb. 2, leading to the tragic loss of Hannah, Jeremiah, and Jacob Oliora, as reported by ClickOnDetroit. Despite the lack of smoke detectors in the home, Prosecutor Karen McDonald conveyed the incident as a result of unfortunate circumstances rather than negligence.
"Investigators concluded the deaths of Hannah, Jeremiah, and Jacob Oliora resulted from a tragic accident," McDonald said in a statement acquired by FOX 2 Detroit. The security measures that were in place were deemed necessary due to the nature of the children's conditions—both Jeremiah and Jacob had autism, with Jeremiah being non-verbal. Neighbors described the swift devastation of the blaze, with Jewelette Estes telling ClickOnDetroit, "In maybe about 10 minutes, that house was up in flames."
The locks and other security measures were intended to protect the two boys from leaving the home without supervision, an issue the family had confronted previously. The parents, Don and Liz Oliora, were working at the time of the fire — Don as a food delivery driver and Liz as a nurse. According to details from a search warrant affidavit mentioned by The Detroit News, only about an hour after Hannah had spoken to her father about dinner plans, she made a frantic 911 call reporting that their house was on fire and they could not escape.
Despite attempts by police and fire crews to control the flames and rescue the children, all three were pronounced dead after being transported to nearby hospitals. The grim aftermath was further underscored by a statement from West Bloomfield Schools shared by ClickOnDetroit, expressing the community's heartbreak and the varying impacts of grief experienced by all touched by the tragedy. Following the investigation, authorities have yet to determine how the fire started, adding yet another layer of heartache to the story of a family who was striving under challenging circumstances to maintain a secure environment for their special needs children.
