An integral part of the festivities is the recognition of North Carolina's 'Community Star' during the event. The title this year has been awarded to Dr. David Pope, renowned for his dedication towards enhancing healthcare within rural and underserved areas. "Beyond health care, Dr. Pope’s leadership has touched every corner of his community," NCDHHS Office of Rural Health Director Maggie Sauer stated, according to a recent NCDHHS news release. His work with the Scotland Health Care System, including Scotland Memorial Hospital and a network of medical practices, embodies the theme of this year's National Rural Health Day, 'Rural Rising'.
Dr. Pope has been at the helm of transformative initiatives to augment healthcare in these regions. They includes strengthening the workforce in nursing and medical assistance, integrating Community Health Workers, and expanding services that prioritize care for the underrepresented.
