The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services' Office of Rural Health is joining hands with communities nationwide to honor National Rural Health Day. A recent announcement from the department highlighted the importance of the day for rural providers, partners, and residents, celebrating their resilience and commitment to quality rural healthcare. "Today is an opportunity for our rural providers, partners and residents to celebrate their resilience, commitment to excellence and unwavering dedication to ensuring our rural health care is the best it can be," NCDHHS Deputy Secretary for Health Debra Farrington said, in a statement obtained by NCDHHS.

An integral part of the festivities is the recognition of North Carolina's 'Community Star' during the event. The title this year has been awarded to Dr. David Pope, renowned for his dedication towards enhancing healthcare within rural and underserved areas. "Beyond health care, Dr. Pope’s leadership has touched every corner of his community," NCDHHS Office of Rural Health Director Maggie Sauer stated, according to a recent NCDHHS news release. His work with the Scotland Health Care System, including Scotland Memorial Hospital and a network of medical practices, embodies the theme of this year's National Rural Health Day, 'Rural Rising'.

Dr. Pope has been at the helm of transformative initiatives to augment healthcare in these regions. They includes strengthening the workforce in nursing and medical assistance, integrating Community Health Workers, and expanding services that prioritize care for the underrepresented. Each of these actions have carved a path for better health outcomes and more reliable resources for North Carolina's rural citizens.

The significance of National Rural Health Day and the recognition of local heroes like Dr. Pope underscores an often-underreported aspect of American healthcare—the rural struggle and stride towards optimal care. NC Rural Center President and CEO Patrick Woodie highlights the state's legacy, "Our rural health legacy is unparalleled in this state and that is always worthy of celebration and grateful reflection," Woodie told an NCDHHS news release
