Canal Street was the site of simultaneous law enforcement activity yesterday, with both the New York Police Department (NYPD) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) conducting unplanned raids. The NYPD arrived near Broadway around 10 a.m. to seize counterfeit merchandise, confiscating 26 items and arresting one individual, according to ABC7NY.
During the NYPD’s enforcement operation, federal ICE agents arrived without prior notice. The NYPD reported that they were not informed of the ICE action and subsequently left the area, as reported by ABC7NY. The federal activity followed a meeting between Mayor-elect Mamdani and President Trump at the White House, during which potential cooperation on city matters was discussed.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) released a statement confirming ICE’s targeted operation, which resulted in the detention of Abdou Tall, an undocumented immigrant previously arrested on charges related to counterfeit merchandise. DHS stated, “Abdou Tall, an illegal alien from Senegal and criminal with multiple arrests relating to trafficking counterfeit merchandise,” was taken into custody following a pursuit and resistance, the statement obtained by NY1 noted. The statement also said that the NYPD did not act on a prior detainer that would have transferred Tall into federal custody, which DHS said could have prevented further alleged illegal activity.
Federal authorities stated that additional incidents might have been avoided if Tall had been transferred to ICE following his arrest in October. DHS reported that Tall was released after the initial arrest and was subsequently arrested again on October 11 for felony trademark counterfeiting. The NYPD said they were carrying out routine vendor enforcement when ICE agents arrived and did not interact with the federal agents on site.
Advocacy groups responded quickly to the incident, providing updates on the arrest and the presence of federal authorities. Previous raids on street vendors on Canal Street by federal agents have also been reported by immigration advocates, who have questioned the involvement of federal authorities in these operations. Police sources and the NYPD have not yet issued an official statement as the situation develops.
