The NYPD is on the hunt for two young men connected to a violent episode in Queens where a car meetup escalated into chaos. As per reports from Gothamist, an incident occurred early Sunday morning involving about 50 cars participating in drag races and reckless driving on a residential block in Malba, resulting in an attack on a local couple and culminating in a car being set on fire.
The confrontation began when Blake and Melissa Ferrer, the homeowners, went outside to address the boisterous crowd at 141st Street and 11th Avenue. According to authorities, two of the individuals assaulted the Ferrers, with Blake suffering multiple injuries, including broken ribs and damages to his shoulder, nose, cheek, and throat; Melissa was punched in the face. The couple and neighbors allege a delayed response to their 911 calls, a claim which the NYPD attributes to coinciding emergencies that local precinct officers were managing.
According to a FOX 5 NY report, photos of the suspected assailants have been released. They are described as two males, aged 18 to 24, with one last seen wearing a dark-colored jacket and pants, and the other a dark hat and dark sweatshirt. Following the incident, Councilmembers Vickie Paladino, Robert Holden, and Kristy Marmorato demanded stronger enforcement and accountability measures, citing residents' need for firearm permits for self-defense. Paladino, in particular, labeled the culprits as "thugs," "punks," and "animals," and detailed that the district would be allocated four dedicated NYPD patrol cars along with additional security resources.
The car engulfed in flames belongs to a private security guard who worked in the vicinity. Councilwoman Paladino also called out what she labeled as insufficient emergency response times, noting that some local residents were advised by the 911 operators to instead reach out to 311 or the "quality of life" unit.
