"As a parent and former teacher, I know law enforcement activity at schools creates understandable anxiety for students, parents, and educators," McDonald said, emphasizing the need to protect schools as safe learning environments, according to FOX 2 Detroit.
The memo advises schools to maintain working security cameras and ensure all visitors sign in and identify themselves. It also recommends that staff consult district counsel or an administrator when presented with a warrant by an external agency, focusing on school safety and due process, as reported by CBS News Detroit.
The county prosecutor’s office issued a memo for students’ families about emergency contact information during ICE actions. McDonald said, "We need to remind our students and ourselves that everyone has basic constitutional rights, including the right to be free from unlawful arrest, regardless of their immigration status," and added, "No one should interfere with ICE because that only increases the risk to everyone."
