An off-duty state trooper from the Texas Department of Public Safety was shot on Friday afternoon, Eagle Pass Police Department reports. The victim, identified as Pedro Elizondo, and suspect Ivan Rodriguez were both found with gunshot wounds in the parking lot of Mall De Las Aguilas at around 2:55 p.m., according to FOX San Antonio.
Following the shooting, Elizondo was transported to a San Antonio hospital for further medical treatment, while Rodriguez, after being released from a local emergency room, was taken into custody. As reported by KSAT, Rodriguez has been charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon. The Eagle Pass police suggest that the incident may have stemmed from "personal matters".
The shooting prompted a significant response from local law enforcement, including the Maverick County Sheriff's Office, U.S. Border Patrol, Customs and Border Protection, Department of Public Safety, and Precinct 2 constables. This collective effort worked both to secure the scene and ensure the safety of those within the premises at the time of the incident.
Currently held at the Tom Bowles Detention Center, Rodriguez's bond is set at $175,000. According to officials, additional charges could be pending as the investigation by the Eagle Pass Police Department continues. The condition of Elizondo, the off-duty state trooper, injured during the event, has not been disclosed beyond his relocation for medical treatment; the details of his injuries or recovery remain unclear.
