Ogden police have taken a 56-year-old man into custody following a reported road rage altercation involving a pregnant woman, with the incident escalating to physical assault. The suspect, identified as Larry Daley, faces multiple charges, including assault of a pregnant person, a third-degree felony, and committing a violent offense in the presence of a child, according to KUTV.
The matter began on June 13, when Daley is alleged to have cut off the woman's vehicle, which provoked her to yell at him. Daley then supposedly followed the woman for several blocks to her destination, where the situation escalated. According to police documents, Daley approached the woman's open driver-side door and pushed her back into the car, knowing she was pregnant. An adult passenger and three young children inside the vehicle witnessed the confrontation, as did two neighborhood residents, as reported by KSL.
After being advised of his Miranda rights, Daley purportedly admitted to having been involved in the confrontation but denied the assault. "He did apologize and say that he should not have followed the female victim to the altercation," law enforcement officials were quoted in an affidavit. A short video also captured Daley walking away from the scene, per FOX 13.
Utah's response to rising road rage incidents includes enhanced charges and a new system to track these events, as State Senator Todd Weiler mentioned, "People are more aggressive. We have more people shooting guns out of their cars at other drivers." Weiler explained the importance of the public being aware of the increased penalties and the state's efforts to curb such dangerous behaviors, with a data collection initiative expected to take around a year and a half before Utah has complete data from the new tracking system, KUTV reported.
