Pushing the boundaries of innovation, The Ohio State University is setting its sights on artificial intelligence as it plans to add 100 new AI-savvy faculty members to its ranks over the next five years. This hiring initiative is part of a grand strategy to not only boost research and education in AI but also to strengthen the university's standing on both national and global stages.

The ambitious move was outlined in President Walter "Ted" Carter Jr.'s recent State of the University address. It's a reflection of Ohio State's commitment to not only quickly adapt but also lead in a field that's set to redefine numerous aspects of society and industry. These new faculty members will operate under three distinct cohorts, as explained by a statement from the Ohio State University news release: Foundational AI, focusing on theoretical aspects; Applied AI, which aims to bridge the gap between conceptual and tangible solutions; and Responsible AI with Cybersecurity, dedicated to ethical innovation and securing digital infrastructures.

Initial hiring processes are already in motion, with the first batch of hires expected to join in the fall of 2026. These fresh perspectives are anticipated to complement the already robust AI presence within Ohio State, leveraging the work of approximately 300 scholars working with AI across various disciplines. Ever pushing the envelope, the university had earlier rolled out the AI(X) Hub, a center designed to bolster cross-disciplinary work in artificial intelligence.

Tackling the integration of AI in education head-on, the recruitment of these experts is just one element of Ohio State's broader AI strategy. This includes initiatives like AI Fluency, which aims to ensure every student graduating from the Class of 2029 onwards is capable of applying AI principles within their own fields of study.
