As the holidays fast approach, Oklahoma City Animal Welfare is offering a heartwarming opportunity for animal lovers to make a difference in the life of a shelter dog. The "Home for the Holidays" program seeks community members willing to temporarily open their homes to furry friends in need of a respite from shelter life. According to information released by OKC's official website, the concept is simple: residents 18 years or older can foster an adoptable dog and give them a taste of a loving home for up to two weeks.
Brock Rowe, Development Services Director, highlighted the mutual benefit of this initiative, remarking, "Home for the Holidays not only gives pets a chance to relax in a home environment but also helps them gain valuable exposure to potential adopters during the busy holiday season." He further emphasized the central ethos of the season—a time for giving—suggesting the program as an avenue for the community to provide "care, comfort and a place to belong" to these dogs. Fostered dogs will be up for adoption afterwards, possibly having already curled up in the hearts of their temporary caretakers, as per the OKC's official website.
Participation in the program also promises a hassle-free experience. All dogs from the shelter are prepared for their temporary homes, spayed or neutered, microchipped, and with their vaccinations and preventatives up to date, as detailed on the OKC Animal Welfare page. The interested residents can simply walk into the shelter located at 2811 SE 29th St., Tuesday through Saturday between noon and 5 p.m., with adoptions and fosters operating on a first-come, first-served basis.

Those who foster a dog and then see them adopted are welcome to foster another, maintaining the stream of compassion and care.
