Ongoing construction and repairs across Oklahoma City's key highways are setting the scene for strategic detours and longer commute times for drivers – a necessary discomfort for the city's long-term infrastructure gains. As reported by the Oklahoma Department of Transportation, closures and lane narrowings on interstates I-35, I-40, I-44, and several state highways will continue to affect traffic flow around the metro area.

Following the recent update, I-35 will be partly closed as the southbound off-ramp to S.W. 19th St. in Moore shuts down Thursday night for essential safety device repair. Meanwhile, along I-40, the westbound on and off-ramps at Anderson Rd. remain closed through Nov. 21, and I-40 will go down to one lane at times, from I-240 to Douglas Blvd. in the late evening until early morning hours for the remainder of the week. The westbound I-40 service road will also see a cut down to one lane at Sunnylane Rd. on Friday due to surface repair work.

The drive through Midwest City is going to get tighter as well, with east and westbound I-40 narrowed to just two lanes each way from I-240 to Town Center Dr., carrying on through 2025 without shoulders or merge distances, and the expected intermittent ramp closures could make navigation quite tricky. Over on the I-35 front, traffic on north and southbound lanes and ramps between Memorial Rd. and US-77/2nd St. in Edmond will face similar intermittent narrowing until summer 2025 due to resurfacing and bridge construction, according to the Oklahoma Department of Transportation.

SH-9W's construction at I-35 in Norman, poised to last until early 2026, aims to transform the interchange into a more efficient Diverging Diamond Interchange, and it looks like the northbound I-35 on and off-ramps to SH-9W will be off-limits Thursday and Friday nights for striping labor, compounding the already expected lane and ramp closures through November. Enhancements are not only focused under the hoods of major highways – local arenas like SH-37/S.E. 4th St. in Moore are sealed off between Broadway Ave. and Tower Dr. for a railroad bridge project estimated to continue through summer 2026, making it a long haul for the construction period.

As 2026 approaches, several major road projects are set to affect traffic in the Oklahoma City area. The I-44 off-ramps to N.W. 10th St. will remain closed through the summer for a bridge construction project, while other routes, including Garth Brooks Blvd. in Yukon, will be reduced to a single lane in each direction under I-40 for resurfacing work. Commuters should plan for potential delays as these projects continue.
