As hunger looms over Oklahoma amid a federal shutdown affecting SNAP benefits, state Democratic leaders express dissatisfaction with a proposed stopgap measure by GOP counterparts. In statements obtained by Oklahoma House of Representatives, Democratic legislators criticized the delay and inadequacy of Republican responses to the crisis.
According to the announcement, Oklahoma House and Senate GOP leaders will allocate $1M weekly to food banks for a maximum of seven weeks, hinging on continuous federal funding absence. While this move offers some relief, House Democratic Leader Cyndi Munson and Senate Democratic Leader Julia Kirt highlight the disparity between the provided funds and the actual needs of hungry Oklahomans.
"We appreciate the targeted emergency support being voted on by Oklahoma Republican Leaders, but we know that it is still not enough," Munson said on the Oklahoma House of Representatives, acknowledging the gesture but calling attention to the urgent needs yet unmet. Meanwhile, Kirt underscored that the $1M is a drop compared to the oceanic loss, with the SNAP program normally infusing $30M weekly into the community.
"We cannot control the dysfunction in Washington, but we can continue to support the Oklahomans we were elected to serve," Munson told the Oklahoma House of Representatives. Bringing to the forefront potential solutions, she suggested looking into a state-funded emergency SNAP benefits program to aid citizens in need immediately.
Both Munson and Kirt are rallying for a special session, hoping to secure additional resources to bridge the gap exacerbated by the federal deadlock. They emphasize that while food banks rise to the occasion in hard times, expecting them to compensate for public duty is unrealistic and unsustainable. "We need to come in, get to work and make sure we have funds ready for these big challenges immediately," Kirt stated in her latest plea for action, as per the Oklahoma House of Representatives.
The allotted funds, set to be made available, will come from the State Emergency Fund with resources currently amounting to $7.8M.
