Over a hundred young minds converged on the Oklahoma State Capitol for the inaugural Oklahoma Latino Youth Leadership Summit on November 8. Hosted by the Oklahoma Legislative Latino Caucus, 110 participants ranging from high school juniors and seniors to college-age mentors assembled to discuss and learn about leadership, civic engagement, and public service with a distinct Oklahoma lens. According to a report by the Oklahoma House of Representatives, the attendees hailed from various towns across the state, including Guymon, Ada, Oklahoma City, and Tulsa.
During this summit, legislators from the Latino Caucus and industry experts led workshops aimed to encourage and support these young people. "The simple truth is that these kids belong here," Rep. Annie Menz, D-Norman, affirmed in an interview. She underscored the commitment of the Latino Caucus to youth development and empowerment. Sen. Michael Brooks, D-Oklahoma City, chairman of the Latino Caucus, expressed his gratitude for the participation and the support that were central to making this event a success.
The summit focused on various themes such as professional development, community advocacy, college readiness, and the influence of targeted leadership. It aimed to forge connections between the youth and mentors, educational institutions, community groups, and elected officials. The event was noted to be non-partisan, offering sessions on civic engagement, campaign basics, public service, as well as college and career planning.
Rep. Arturo Alonso-Sandoval, D-Oklahoma City, offered an optimistic view of the event's impact. "This event gave me great optimism for the future,” he stated, recognizing the burgeoning leadership within Oklahoma's Latino community. Alonso-Sandoval noted that witnessing young leaders discuss themes of service and leadership underscored the importance of inspiring the next generation. He also emphasized the growing inclusivity within Oklahoma’s leadership landscape, reflecting the state’s rapidly expanding Latino community, according to the Oklahoma House of Representatives.
The event's success was a collective effort, and the participants left armed with new skills and knowledge to navigate the paths of leadership and public service. Such initiatives underscore the importance of fostering an environment where young, diverse voices are encouraged to actively shape the future of their communities and their state.
