In the latest back-and-forth concerning federal assistance, Governor Tina Kotek took a firm stand against the Trump Administration's efforts to reclaim SNAP funds meant for Oregonians. In her rejection of this federal pushback, Gov. Kotek released a statement emphatically denouncing the moves by the administration, highlighting the legitimacy of her actions, which were in accordance with a federal court's orders and consultations with the USDA. "Oregon acted lawfully, given the federal court’s directive and the communications with the USDA, and my decision to ensure SNAP benefits went out quickly was in direct alignment with my food emergency declaration," the Governor asserted in a statement obtained by the Oregon Newsroom.
Governor Tina Kotek distributed Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits to recipients last Thursday using funds authorized by the court. The move came as litigation over federal restrictions on food aid continues. According to the Governor’s office, the state’s emergency declaration on food assistance remains in effect to ensure that residents can continue accessing groceries without interruption. The declaration is part of Oregon’s broader strategy to maintain food support during ongoing federal challenges.
The Trump Administration has requested a review of Oregon’s continued distribution of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, raising questions about the balance of federal and state responsibilities. In response, Governor Tina Kotek stated that she is prepared to defend the state’s actions. Together with Attorney General Dan Rayfield, Kotek said they are taking steps to ensure that food assistance to eligible residents remains uninterrupted. “We will fight this every step of the way,” the governor told reporters.
As legal proceedings continue, Governor Tina Kotek’s office stated that it will closely monitor developments and take necessary actions to prevent any disruption to the distribution of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. According to the Governor’s office, Oregon residents currently enrolled in the program should not experience interruptions in their benefits. State officials emphasized their commitment to maintaining food assistance amid ongoing federal challenges.
