Controversy has arisen in Oregon as McMinnville High School senior Christian Jimenez, confirmed as a U.S. citizen, was detained by ICE while on his lunch break from school, according to his brother Cesar Jimenez in a statement obtained by OregonLive; the sweep by ICE agents did not only ensnare Jimenez but reportedly involved at least three other U.S. citizens in the area.
Among the detained, two women were held at a Portland ICE facility after filming ICE agents, Oregon For All, an immigrants' rights group, detailed the incidents, explaining that while the women, one in her early 60s and the other in her late 30s, were released after several hours, the implications of their detainment raise serious questions regarding the operations of ICE and the targeting of American citizens and residents alike, according to a KGW interview with Oregon For All Network Director Jess Montoya, the high school student was eventually released and returned to their family.
These detentions prompted a local outcry leading to protests; residents of McMinnville gathered waving signs to voice their disapproval of the ICE actions, for instance, Betty Hansen voiced her distress over the incident, saying, "When they start here locally, grabbing children out of the parking lots and breaking windows and having them disappear where their parents don't even know they're at, that is a crime," in a statement to KGW.
Bubba King, a Yamhill County Commissioner, criticized the operations, suggesting that such aggressive enforcement tactics aim to spread fear within the community, calling the events "awful" and expressing his alarm at the targeting of community members whether they are documented or not, as he told KPTV; McMinnville School District Superintendent Dr. Kourtney Ferrua also confirmed the incident involving the student, stating the school is addressing the emotional and social needs of students in response to what has transpired.
The advocacy group Oregon For All is stressing that these incidents are indicative of overreach by ICE, asserting that the agency has been intimidating Oregonians and acting outside the law while calling attention to the fact that citizens have a right to document ICE in public spaces, a principle supported by the First Amendment, multiple sources have attempted to reach ICE for comment on the detainments but have not received a response at the time of reporting.
