As the government shutdown extends beyond a month, Palm Beach County residents are beginning to feel the effects of suspended SNAP benefits. In response, The Subculture Group, a local dining company, is offering free daily meals to affected individuals. Founder Rodney Mayo announced the initiative on Facebook, stating that participating restaurants will begin serving meals on Monday, according to CW34.
About 10% of households in Palm Beach County could lose access to food assistance. Restaurants under The Subculture Group—including Howleys, Dada, Hullabaloo, Shanghai’d, Tryst, and all Subculture Coffee locations—are preparing for increased demand. Mayo, who provided similar aid during the COVID-19 pandemic, told WPBF that the group is ready to serve as many people as possible despite uncertainty about turnout.
A dedicated website, subculturesnap.org, will provide details on meal locations and access information for those affected. The Palm Beach County Food Bank is also preparing for higher demand and is encouraging community donations. Mayo has urged other restaurant owners to assist in supporting local residents impacted by the shutdown, as reported by WPBF.
