Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Major Crash Investigation Unit is currently examining a fatal collision that involved a pedestrian and a Chevrolet Silverado in the 2900 block of Eastway Drive. According to a statement from CMPD, the accident occurred early in the morning on Monday, Nov. 3. Officers, alongside Charlotte Fire and MEDIC, responded swiftly to the scene upon receiving a call for service at around 6:07 a.m.
The initial findings suggest that the pedestrian, identified as Olvin Calero Martinez, was walking outside the marked crosswalk when struck by the vehicle. Martinez, aged 45, was quickly transported to the hospital with serious injuries. Guadalupe Garcia Martinez, the 44-year-old driver of the Silverado, cooperated fully with the officers at the scene. Despite the tragic outcome, the police do not believe that speed had been a contributing factor, nor was impairment on the part of the driver. It has been indicated, however, that the pedestrian might have been impaired.
Tragically, after battling his injuries for two weeks, Olvin Calero Martinez passed away yesterday. The hospital pronounced Mr. Calero Martinez deceased, marked by a somber closure for family and loved ones who had been hoping for a recovery.
