Members of the Phoenix community gathered last Thursday for a symbolic brick-laying event to mark the progress of the new Fire Station 15's construction, a project that signifies much more than the growth of a building. A representation of the city's dedication to public safety, as confirmed by voters in 2023, this new station at 45th Avenue just south of Camelback Road will enhance the capabilities of the Phoenix Fire Department, as noted in a statement from the City of Phoenix.
The new Fire Station 15, expected to become operational in 2026, will carry the legacy of a service that has been an integral part of the west Phoenix community for the past 70 years. The station will not only accommodate a second all-hazards fire engine, and a second ambulance but also increase service capacity. This expansion is directly tied to improving response times and maintaining neighborhood safety resources.
Fire Chief Mike Duran has expressed how the new station's design places a spotlight on the well-being of firefighters, acknowledging the stark reality that cancer has become their leading cause of death. "The station’s design reflects the department’s priority on firefighter health," Duran stated, highlighting features such as dedicated zones to diminish contaminant exposure and lighting that supports recovery.
Funded by G.O. bond measures, Fire Station 15 promises to be a reflection of sustainability, safety, and wellness. Innovations like red-spectrum lighting to facilitate recovery and a state-of-the-art gym intended for fitness and injury prevention are core to the project’s blueprint. Moreover, it introduces enhancements designed to reduce the risks that firefighters face daily.
The former Fire Station 15, built in 1979, will be given new life as well, repurposed to support the Community Assistance Program. This initiative provides indispensable support for residents grappling with behavioral and mental health issues, thereby continuing the site's history of community service.
