As the dust settles from the government shutdown, Arizonians are still grappling with the fallout. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) delays have left many families in precarious positions. Among them, Phoenix mother Marzia Munari, who relayed to ABC15, "There’s no money, there’s no SNAP benefits. So what am I going to do to keep my family fed and safe?" Munari is responsible for not only her household but also the care of her elderly mother and daughter with special needs, for whom SNAP benefits are not a luxury but a necessity.
While the Department of Economic Security has made assurances that "funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), also referred to as Nutrition Assistance (NA), was made available through September 30, 2026," according to a statement provided to ABC15, families like Munari's can't afford the wait. Munari detailed the domino effect the missing funds have on her budget, leading to a critical situation where she can't even pay her power bill, essential for her daughter's health-supporting equipment.
Elsewhere in the country, there's another side to the SNAP delay narrative. Over 200,000 families affected by the shutdown received a lifeline in the form of $50 emergency payments from GiveDirectly and Propel, as reported by GiveDirectly. The swift mobilization of this effort, fueled by the generosity of more than 4,700 donors, demonstrated the power of community and technology coming together in times of need. These funds were dispatched daily, starting November 3rd, using virtual and physical cards, providing much-needed relief for essentials besides food, like diapers or other necessities.
In these trying times, it's the resilience and adaptability of organizations and individuals that have managed to hold the fabric of society together. Marzia Munari's ordeal represents the wider struggle many Americans are facing. "It makes me lose confidence in our future, you know, what is it going to be like if this is acceptable?" she confided to ABC15. Her worry echoes the uncertainty prevalent among those at the mercy of administrative delays and political standoffs. Nevertheless, immediate efforts by entities like GiveDirectly offer a glimpse of hope and practical assistance during acute crises, as they strive to fill the gaps and ensure that no American needs to go to bed hungry.
