The quest for innovation within law enforcement has landed the Phoenix Police Department at the forefront of public safety advancements. The department received the highest accolade at the 2025 Versaterm Innovation Awards in Salt Lake City, as reported by Phoenix.gov. Their pioneering use of technology has not only garnered this prestigious award but also strengthened the bond between the police and the Phoenix community.
Assistant Chief Ed DeCastro revealed the secret to the department's success, stating, "I think it's because we are creative, we are innovative." He continued, highlighting their forward-thinking ethos, saying, "We do think outside the box, and we always try to make ourselves better." The sentiment reflects a broader commitment to continuous improvement, a mindset that has now been nationally recognized.
One particularly successful initiative is CommunityConnect, a platform that engages directly with residents through text messages and emails. It delivers real-time updates to 911 callers and crime victims. Beyond just keeping the community informed, the system also invites feedback through user-friendly surveys, providing data essential for informed policy-making within the department. Communications Bureau Administrator Allie Edwards noted the positive reaction from the public, stating, "The community loves it, it's been really well received."
Complementing their suite of tools is CallTriage, a conversational AI designed to reroute non-emergency calls effectively. The introduction of this system has resulted in a 17% reduction in non-emergency calls in the short span of two months, allowing dispatchers and officers greater capacity to address urgent needs.
An especially notable achievement is the extension of the CommunityConnect system to support sexual assault survivors. This collaboration has resulted in a feature that allows survivors to securely track the status of their Sexual Assault Evidence Kits online, providing necessary clarity and control. Assistant Crime Lab Administrator Ben Swanholm praised the department's innovative use of the system, saying, "Through our collaboration, we've expanded the platform's scope to truly meet the needs of our community."
With technology reshaping the landscape of public safety, Phoenix PD serves as an exemplar of how police departments can evolve to meet contemporary challenges. Police Administrator Amanda Markham pointed to the transformative effects of such a gamut of tools, claiming, "This project shows what can happen when we push the limits of existing tools to serve people better." Markham's management of the Versaterm technologies' implementation emphasizes the practical impact of innovation on the community and its role in solving real-world problems.
