For travelers who frequently pass through Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, it's time to prepare for a slight detour. Starting on November 9th, eastbound Sky Harbor Boulevard — which runs along the airport's Terminal 3 — will be closed every night, barring weekends, from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. The closure, as reported by the City of Phoenix, is due to construction set to last until November 18th. As a result, all eastbound traffic will be rerouted through Terminal 3's Inner Curb lanes, and drivers are being told to expect and plan for delays during these hours.
Officials are encouraging drivers to think ahead and approach the airport from the east side to more easily circumvent the construction zone. Moreover, they're pushing for the use of the 24th or 44th Street PHX Sky Train® stations as preferable alternatives for dropping off or picking up passengers. This is an attempt to minimize the inevitable traffic congestion that construction work will bring to this part of the airport.
There are also changes in store for ground transportation and ride-sharing services. According to the city's announcement, traffic for ground transportation at Terminal 3 will shift to the North Inner Curb, and ride-share services will move to the South Outer Curb. Some passengers may find themselves guided towards the PHX Sky Train® stations for their ride-hailing pickups and drop-offs during this time frame.
Despite the eastbound boulevard closure, the Terminal 3 Garage will remain accessible from Westbound Sky Harbor Boulevard. It's a small consolation for regular visitors that the exit from the garage onto Eastbound Sky Harbor Boulevard will stay open. All this turmoil is a part of the Terminal 3 North 2 Concourse project, which aims to expand the terminal with additional gates and amenities like shops, restaurants, and a lounge — not to mention a LEED Silver Certification the project is striving for.
