In the spirit of giving, deputies from the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office Community Policing Unit are taking a break from their regular beat to deliver some holiday cheer. Partnering with local organizations, these deputies gathered on Tuesday afternoon at the rear of a Publix in Largo to load up and distribute Thanksgiving meals to families facing hardships.
The interaction between law enforcement and community members is usually painted with a palette of tension and mistrust, but, here we see officers serving as couriers of hope. Dozens of families received the essentials of a Thanksgiving spread, a tradition that Pinellas County Sheriff’s deputies have upheld for 22 years, according to a statement obtained by the Pinellas County Sheriff's website.
Key players in this annual tradition include the Indian Rocks Beach Rotary Club, Calvary Episcopal Church, and of course, the deputies themselves. The Thanksgiving package is comprehensive: a fully cooked turkey, complemented by mashed potatoes, stuffing, green beans and the requisite cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie. Loaf of bread, peanut butter, jelly, snack cakes, iced tea, and apple juice round out the offering, ensuring that the recipients' holiday table mirrors an abundance many take for granted.
Community and faith-based organizations like Calvary Episcopal Church do not limit their generosity to the holiday season. With initiatives like the Beach Community Food Pantry, they extend their hand all year round. Operating every Wednesday and Thursday, the church’s pantry, stands as a testament to sustained community support, its doors always open for donations, monetary or non-perishable food products. "If anyone would like to help with holiday meals, or the food pantry, please contact the Calvary Episcopal Church at 727-595-2374," reads the statement from the Pinellas County Sheriff's website.
While the din of daily news often resonates with tales of discord and divide, these deputies, the Indian Rocks Beach Rotary Club, and Calvary Episcopal Church remind us that community is about coming together.
