Saturday night's protest in Portland's South Waterfront was under the watchful eye of the Portland Police Bureau, which had activated an Incident Management Team to oversee the event. According to a news release from Portland Police Bureau, the team was managed by a Crowd Management Incident Commander and included the Rapid Response Team and Dialogue Liaison Officers, who are tasked with bridging communication between officers and demonstrators.
In the midst of the protest, Portland Police Bureau reported making one arrest; 41-year-old Travis W. Juhr found himself booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center with charges of Criminal Mischief in the Third Degree. Managing a variety of resources to keep the peace, the arrest brought the total number related to the recent South Waterfront protests to a tally of 67.
The bureau emphasized their commitment to not engaging in immigration enforcement, aligning with Portland Police Bureau Directive 810.10, yet reaffirmed their dedication to ensuring public safety and upholding state laws. In the course of their duties, officers are prepared to assemble in larger groups to facilitate targeted arrests for crimes identified at the protest, as well as to investigate and potentially pursue prosecution for criminal activities at a later time.
Portland Police Bureau has leveraged an Events channel on a platform known as X, the successor to Twitter, for disseminating public safety announcements pertinent to ongoing and upcoming protest activity, though specific crimes may not result in immediate arrests, it remains clear that follow-up investigations could lead to charges in the future. Interested individuals can therefore stay informed by following the Portland Police Bureau page linked in their official statement.
