A fiery single-car wreck on a rural Stanislaus County road this morning turned a quiet stretch of pavement into a deadly scene, leaving two people dead just outside Waterford, authorities said. The crash happened on Hickman Road, just north of Cogswell Road, where firefighters arrived to find the vehicle fully engulfed in flames. Both occupants were pronounced dead at the scene.
Crash details
According to CBS Sacramento, calls started coming in a little after 6:30 a.m. reporting a crash on Hickman Road. When emergency crews reached the area, they found a sedan on fire with two people trapped inside, and the California Highway Patrol confirmed both victims died at the scene.
What investigators say
Investigators, as per KCRA 3, believe the sedan was attempting a right turn when it veered off the roadway on the east side and slammed into a raised concrete irrigation box, triggering the fire. A review of CHP traffic logs cited by the station places the report time at about 6:40 a.m. and identifies the car as a 2012 Toyota sedan. CHP officials said it is still unknown whether drugs or alcohol played any role in the crash.
Road closure and response
Hickman Road was shut down through the early morning commute while crews worked the scene and a detour was set up, as noted by CBS Sacramento. The Stanislaus Regional Fatal Investigation Unit joined local fire agencies to put out the blaze and document the crash site, and drivers were urged to steer clear of the area while investigators did their work.
Next steps
The CHP investigation remains active and officials plan to release more information once it is confirmed, as mentioned by KCRA 3. Authorities have not yet released the names of the victims and have not identified a definitive cause.
