A Queens man has been sentenced to 13 years in prison for assaulting an elderly man at Brooklyn’s Atlantic Terminal. According to the Brooklyn District Attorney’s office, 38-year-old Matthew Lloyd was found guilty of second-degree attempted murder following a jury trial that concluded on April 10. Justice Michael Kitsis of the Brooklyn Supreme Court imposed the sentence, which also includes five years of post-release supervision. Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez referred to the incident involving the 77-year-old victim as “horrific and unprovoked.”
The trial included surveillance footage showing the incident on August 18, 2023. Around 4:20 p.m., the elderly victim was standing on the platform for Track 5 when Lloyd approached, struck him multiple times, and pushed him onto the tracks. The victim fell roughly five feet, hitting his head near an electrified rail. The assault took place at a heavily trafficked transit hub, and a transit worker intervened, preventing potentially more severe injuries.
Following the attack, the victim, whose identity remains confidential, suffered persistent pain, mobility challenges, and lasting impairments to his vision and memory. The District Attorney’s office noted that a Long Island Rail Road mechanical foreman acted quickly, stopping train traffic on Track 5 after hearing the victim’s cries and helping to prevent further injury.
The case was prosecuted by the District Attorney’s Orange Zone Trial Bureau, with Senior Assistant District Attorney Matthew Barg and Assistant District Attorney Jane Dowling leading the courtroom proceedings. They were supported by Assistant District Attorneys Michael Trabulsi and Iris Das, Deputy Bureau Chiefs, as well as Bureau Chief Danielle Eaddy.
