A 67-year-old visitor from Rhode Island, Liming Xu, was found unresponsive in the waters of Kalapakī Bay on Thursday afternoon and later died despite efforts by first responders.

According to a press release from the County of Kaua‘i, emergency services were called to the scene around 12:30 p.m. after reports surfaced of a man in distress. The Kaua‘i Fire Department and U.S. Coast Guard were involved in the rescue, with personnel managing to bring Xu to shore before performing CPR. He was subsequently transported to Wilcox Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead after medics continued life-saving efforts.
