Round Rock, a city known for its vibrant sports scene, just got a significant upgrade with the completion of the expansion of the Round Rock Sports Center. This move aims to bolster the city's reputation as a premier destination for various sporting events. According to the City of Round Rock's announcement on their website, a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held this past Monday, celebrating the culmination of efforts that began with the facility's establishment back in 2014.
The already popular indoor sports hub, which regularly welcomes amateur and youth sports tournaments, has grown considerably with this latest $17.5 million investment, adding 25,000 square feet to its premises, and has made room for two more basketball courts or up to four additional volleyball courts. It's also introduced championship court seating that has substantially increased the venue's capacity. Now, the center can handle events such as a 16-court volleyball tournament or multiple large-scale competitions at once. For instance, a six-basketball tournament can run concurrently with a cheer competition, ushering in a new era of expansive sports tourism for the city.
Other enhancements include a new secondary facility entrance and more surface parking spaces, meant to streamline the flow of athletes and spectators alike, adding to the operational finesse that events of such magnitude require. The expansion is part of a larger strategy by Round Rock, as highlighted by a $274 million bond package that voters approved in May 2023, targeting enhancements in recreation, sports infrastructure, and overall quality of life improvements.
Last year alone, the Round Rock Sports Center hosted over 70,000 players and 120,000 spectators, contributing significantly to the city's sports tourism with more than $210 million in economic activity since its inception, according to figures from the City of Round Rock, and with the new expansion in place, these numbers are only expected to surge, as the facility stretches its arms wider to embrace even larger assemblies of sporting aficionados and players.
