The Round Rock Police Department has initiated a novel approach to patrolling its sprawling parks and trails by activating its new Special Assignments Unit (SAU). According to information released on the City of Round Rock's official website, the SAU is equipped with e-bikes and off-road capable vehicles, enabling officers to police areas typically inaccessible to regular patrol cars. The unit is also supported by a certified K-9 explosives-detection team that provides security at large public events.
E-bikes have been selected as the vehicle of choice for this new patrol unit due to recent advancements in battery technology, which have made them more reliable and well-suited for everyday patrols. "Our Special Assignments Unit allows us to take a more flexible and community-focused approach to public safety," Round Rock Police Chief Allen Banks stated in the announcement. The initiative represents a push to increase police presence and improve response times in non-traditional environments, such as a city's various green spaces.
Round Rock's geography, boasting over 2,300 acres of parkland and in excess of 20 miles of hike and bike trails, demands innovation from its law enforcement in terms of mobility.
