A Rowan County Sheriff’s Office deputy was involved in a serious single-vehicle accident on U.S. Highway 601 on last evening. WBTV reports that the incident occurred just before 7 p.m. when the deputy's cruiser left the roadway, hit a culvert and several trees, and rolled multiple times. The deputy was transported to Novant Health Rowan Medical Center with injuries not considered to be life-threatening.
The Rowan County Sheriff's Office, in an announcement shared by Salisbury Post, stated that the deputy had apparently suffered from a medical issue which led to him losing control of his vehicle. The name of the deputy involved has not been released as officials await further confirmation on his condition.
Emergency medical personnel at the scene assessed that the deputy appeared to be having a medical condition prior to the crash. WCNC cites the sheriff's office which explained, "Medical crews on scene determined the deputy appeared to be suffering from a medical condition that caused him to lose control of the vehicle."
Meanwhile, the circumstances leading up to the crash are under investigation by the North Carolina Highway Patrol. The deputy, whose vehicle sustained significant damage, was the only person involved in the crash.
