Downtown Sacramento's K Street now basks in the glow of more than 6,000 new LED lights that stretch from the Golden 1 Center to the SAFE Credit Union Convention Center. As reported by CBS Sacramento, thousands gathered this past Friday, leveraging the communal excitement of a Kings game and the thrum of the ice skating rink's opening weekend, to witness these innovative installations come to life.
The system, formally known as the K Street Marquee LED Lighting, is lauded to be a beacon symbolizing the power of partnership in progressing the city's future. Officials firmly believe that this addition is going to truly transform the ambiance and safety of the locality. As per FOX40, Michael Ault, Executive Director of the Downtown Sacramento Partnership, emphasized that when community partners unite to share a vision, they breathe life into transformative ideas – and these LEDs are testimony to that belief.
These lights aren't merely designed to illuminate; they're computer-controlled to display an array of colors, creating a dynamic K Street personality that can signal anything from holidays to Sacramento Kings victories. Scott Ford, Deputy Director of the Downtown Sacramento Partnership, told CBS Sacramento, "There are limitless possibilities, and it's always going to be a changing personality and very unique to K Street." The new system has already proven to be a charming backdrop for activities like family Christmas photos, adding another layer to the street's vibrant new offer.
The K Street upgrade serves broader intentions than just aesthetics. It aims quickly to become a stalwart of pedestrian safety and community engagement. Combining elements of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED), the LED setup improves sightlines and beckons increased activity after dark, as highlighted by FOX40. This project has also been pivotal in advancing the use of bicycles and public transit in the evenings. A collaborative effort between various city departments, community partners, and the Mayor's office.
Operational until 2 a.m., these LEDs then switch to a bright white signal, indicating the closure of bars and restaurants, yet another thoughtful, practical touch to the K Street experience.
