A man died Tuesday afternoon after crashing his Dodge into a chain-link fence along Florin Road in Sacramento County, in a wreck California Highway Patrol officers believe was set off by a sudden medical emergency behind the wheel. Before officers could reach the scene, the driver of the vehicle he had rear-ended stopped briefly, then left without waiting for police.
According to the CBS Sacramento report by Richard Ramos, CHP's South Sacramento office said the Dodge was traveling westbound on Florin Road west of Highway 99 when it rear-ended a vehicle in front of it, veered to the right, drove onto the sidewalk, and struck a chain-link fence before coming to a stop. An officer already near the scene found the Dodge driver still seat-belted in the driver's seat and unresponsive, according to the report.
Officer Performs CPR as Driver's Condition Deteriorates
The officer pulled the man from the vehicle and began performing CPR, the outlet's report states. Medical personnel arrived shortly after and transported the driver to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His identity has not been disclosed.
CHP officers suspect the man may have suffered a medical emergency that caused the initial collision, though that determination has not been finalized. Under California law, the Sacramento County Coroner's Office is required to investigate sudden or crash-related deaths to determine whether a driver died from a natural medical event before impact or from injuries sustained in the crash itself, a distinction state statute treats as legally significant.
Second Driver Left the Scene Before Officers Arrived
The driver of the vehicle that was rear-ended briefly stopped after the crash but left before officers arrived, leaving investigators without an account from the other motorist involved. Under California Vehicle Code Sections 20001 and 20002, anyone involved in a collision is required to stop and exchange information regardless of who caused the crash; leaving the scene of a property-damage wreck is a misdemeanor, while fleeing one involving injury or death can be charged as a felony punishable by up to four years in state prison. The identity and motive of that driver remain open questions in the investigation.
The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation, and it is not yet clear whether the Dodge driver had any documented history that might bear on the medical-emergency theory. Nationally, sudden driver medical emergencies account for roughly 1.3 percent of passenger vehicle crashes, with the highest rates among drivers 65 and older, according to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data — a reminder that such episodes are rare but not unheard of on the road.
A Corridor With a Long History of Severe Crashes
Florin Road has drawn repeated scrutiny from Sacramento traffic safety planners. The city has designated it part of its Vision Zero “High Injury Network,” a set of arterial streets that make up just 14 percent of city roadways but account for nearly 80 percent of severe and fatal collisions, according to Inside Sacramento. The city council approved capital funding in June 2025 for a second phase of safety upgrades along the corridor, including continuous bike lanes, signal improvements, and radar detection aimed at reducing crashes.
The stretch has seen other fatal incidents in recent months. Tuesday's crash adds to a pattern local officials have cited in pushing for continued infrastructure investment along the corridor.
