San Antonio has installed a new public artwork, "Kindred," a 20-foot painted steel sculpture by local artist Ashley Perez, near Huff Avenue and Mission Road. The sculpture depicts two hands connected by rippling water and honors Vincent Huizar, a descendant of Mission San José, according to the City of San Antonio.

The project, led by the San Antonio Department of Arts & Culture and the World Heritage Office, is part of efforts to enhance the World Heritage Trail. Installed during Native American Heritage Month, "Kindred" also recognizes the area’s indigenous heritage, as reported by the City of San Antonio.

Artist Ashley Perez worked with the Mission San José Neighborhood Association, National Parks Service, and Mission Descendants to create the sculpture "Kindred," which reflects the local community. The artwork includes a Native American medicine wheel, a radial family tree, and symbols such as mesquite pods, corn, and wheat representing the region’s agricultural heritage. Colleen Swain of the World Heritage Office said the sculpture shows San Antonio’s history and diversity while connecting past and future, as stated by the City of San Antonio.
