As the shutdown of the federal government wears on, San Antonio's District 5 is taking measures to ensure that families don't fall through the cracks. Councilmember Teri Castillo has partnered with Impacto Comunitario to launch a food drive aimed to support those who are hardest hit by the reduced distribution of SNAP benefits, which many in the community rely on for their daily sustenance, according to the City of San Antonio.
The food drive event is scheduled for Saturday, November 15, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will be held at Impacto Comunitario's location at 211 N. Park Blvd., 78204. Councilmember Castillo's effort is an attempt to immediately address the food insecurity that has begun to rapidly tighten its grip on over 130,000 Bexar County families. "This food drive is meant to bring community members together in spirit of community solidarity," Castillo stated, emphasizing the critical nature of mutual aid in these challenging times, as reported by the City of San Antonio.
With the ongoing federal shutdown, the councilmember has urged for a reevaluation of fiscal priorities, especially as Bexar County residents prepare to make their way to the polls. The juxtaposition of millions in public funds potentially being allocated to a basketball arena stands in stark contrast against the background of a hunger crisis that is threatening to burgeon among the most vulnerable populations. Tomorrow's election presents a palpable moment for voters to steer the future of public spending, as per the City of San Antonio.
The food drive is calling for donations of basic items such as rice, beans, pasta, tomato sauce, canned goods and vegetables, cooking oil, flour, and Maseca, along with pet food. These contributions will go a long way in making sure that families are able to weather the shutdown without suffering from food shortages, as detailed by the City of San Antonio.
