San Diego residents can expect a warm reprieve as the Thanksgiving holiday approaches, with temperatures climbing above the seasonal average according to the National Weather Service (NWS). Providing a detailed outlook, the NWS San Diego forecasts highs today to be nearly at seasonal norms. However, the real warmth is anticipated later this week as the mercury is set to rise significantly.
Significant to the hike in temperature is the onset of weak to moderate Santa Ana winds, expected to develop on Tuesday and persist through Thanksgiving. A report issued by the NWS San Diego suggests that "Santa Ana winds will develop for Tuesday through Thursday, peaking on Wednesday with an 80% chance of a weak to moderate event." Residents in the favored passes, canyons, and foothills can expect gusts reaching speeds of 30-45 mph.
For Tuesday, the warming trend continues with much warmer conditions and the development of weak Santa Ana winds. NWS San Diego's Area Forecast Discussion specifies high temperatures could reach 10-15 degrees above normal in the valleys. Additionally, by Wednesday, the San Diego area is expected to experience high temperatures 5-10 degrees above normal, with even coastal areas potentially reaching highs in the mid-to-upper 70s.
The Thanksgiving forecast remains warm, with the NWS San Diego suggesting, "Thanksgiving will be warm with high temperatures around 5 to 10 degrees above normal." This forecast aligns with the 7-day Detailed Forecast, which predicts sunny conditions with a high near 75 on Thanksgiving Day. A slight shift, however, is expected following the holiday, with a cooling trend and potential showers early next week, providing relief to the otherwise arid region.
Moving beyond the festive warmth, NWS San Diego indicates a return of onshore flow and cooler temperatures starting Friday, progressing into a cooler weekend with a chance of showers on Sunday.
