Lakeland is gearing up for a change in leadership as voters have elected Sara Roberts McCarley as the city’s next mayor. McCarley, a Lakeland native and current commissioner for the Southwest District, clinched the mayoral victory with just over half the votes, according to WFLA, effectively avoiding a runoff election. Her win marks the first leadership transition since Mayor Bill Mutz began his tenure in 2018.
With a population boom of 10% in the last four years, Lakeland’s growth was a focal point for voters, who shared their desires for managed development and improved infrastructure. “I think a lot of Lakeland isn't really being heard,” voter Tracey Downey said in a statement obtained by 10 Tampa Bay News. She highlighted a need for more amenities, like restaurants, to match the city’s growth. Meanwhile, voter Natalie Garcia underscored the necessity for better roads to accommodate the increasing population.
Ready to tackle these concerns, McCarley shared her goals ahead of taking office in January 2026. “I think I'm really the most well-suited to do this and to watch our growth and make sure that we do it healthy,” she told 10 Tampa Bay News. Her plans involve taking care of Lakeland’s residents and fostering connections among the community. Despite the significance of the election, less than 17% of over 110,000 eligible voters participated in the polling process.
McCarley’s competitors in the race brought varying perspectives and experiences to the table: Cedrick Valrie, a Southeastern University professor, accentuated the necessity for affordable housing and attracting high-wage jobs. Kaitlin Kramer, described as a "working-class candidate" by Fox13 News, leveraged her service-industry background in her campaign for infrastructural improvements, and measures against flooding, and for more affordable housing options. The election’s outcome, however, signifies the voters’ choice for McCarley’s vision and leadership as Lakeland navigates its rapid growth and evolving needs.
