The ongoing case of missing 9-year-old Melodee Buzzard has prompted an extensive search, with investigators releasing new photos of the white 2024 Chevrolet Malibu her mother, Ashlee Buzzard, rented for their road trip. KUTV reports that these photos are intended to assist potential witnesses in providing information by identifying the vehicle, which has no visible damage and was taken before and after the trip.
Private investigator Jason Jensen suggested the importance of the car's unusual appearance in rural areas of Utah, stating, "If you saw a car that’s misplaced, like if you see a small Tudor out in hunting fields, well, that’s a little weird," as per KUTV. The investigators are utilizing the car's GPS tracking data, hoping to piece together a detailed route of the trip. Notably, data from the vehicle's undercarriage might also contain soil samples to indicate specific locations visited during the timeline of Melodee’s disappearance.
Authorities are considering multiple scenarios regarding Melodee's disappearance, including the possibility of her being handed off to another adult. Ashlee Buzzard's behaviors have caught investigators' attention, including backing the rental car into her garage upon returning to California, reported KUTV. Ashlee, who has been released on false imprisonment charges and is wearing a GPS tracker, is scheduled to return to court soon.
In a further development, Melodee’s paternal grandmother, Lilly Denes, told Fox News that she began adopting Melodee while Ashlee was in a mental hospital in 2021, but alleges Ashlee subsequently "took her away". Denes has claimed she has been unable to see Melodee since and described Ashlee as cutting the child "off from the entire world." Additional details revealed by the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office note that Ashlee switched license plates on the rental vehicle to elude detection during her travels with Melodee.
Most recently, an attendant at a gas station in Junction, Utah, related to NewsNation, a peculiar interaction with Ashlee, who was sporting a blonde wig at the time. Surveillance footage from various points along Ashlee and Melodee’s route has also become a focal point in the investigation, with agents of the FBI visiting establishments like the Bear Valley Country Store seeking video evidence, only to learn that the timestamp they needed was beyond the store's two-week video retention window.
