A woman was rescued from her burning apartment on Capitol Hill on Sunday evening, as Seattle police acted swiftly to bring her to safety. According to SPD Blotter, officers responded to a welfare check at around 5:30 p.m. in the 500 block of 14th Avenue East, where they found the apartment filled with smoke and a fire raging on the stovetop.
The officers, upon reaching the ninth floor, realized the situation was dire when they heard a fire alarm blaring from a unit and received no response from within. A neighbor informed the officers that the alarm had been sounding for approximately 30 minutes. Trusting their instincts that the tenant might be at risk, they broke through the apartment door to investigate further.
Inside, they discovered a 47-year-old woman who appeared confused and disoriented amid the haze. The police managed to extract her from the perilous environment just in time. The Seattle Fire Department arrived shortly thereafter, taking control of the fire and suggesting that the upper floors be evacuated to mitigate the risks presented by the heavy smoke.
Once the situation was under control, the firefighters conducted a thorough assessment of the building's integrity and ultimately deemed it safe for residents to return. Meanwhile, the rescued woman received medical attention and was taken to Harborview Medical Center for evaluation, fortunately, no injuries were reported from the incident, which caused a temporary upheaval in the neighborhood due to the emergency response, as detailed by the SPD website.
The quick and decisive action of the Seattle police officers potentially saved the life of the woman and prevented further damage to the building and its inhabitants.
