
A fatal collision between a vehicle and an electric bicycle in Seminole is currently under investigation by deputies with the Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT). The incident, which occurred yesterday, resulted in the death of 82-year-old bicyclist Darell Groves.
Details provided by investigators and shared via a Pinellas County Sheriff's Office press release, explain that John Baustert, 62, was driving his 2012 Toyota Tacoma eastbound on Valencia Terrace when he attempted to turn south onto Seminole Boulevard, this turn resulted in the collision with Groves who was in the wrong bike lane traveling northbound in the southbound lane. The accident took place at the intersection of Seminole Boulevard and Valencia Terrace at approximately 9:21 a.m..
Groves was transported to the hospital following the crash, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the Tacoma, Baustert, did not sustain injuries and cooperated with law enforcement officials at the scene. Investigators working the case have found that neither impairment nor speed seem to be contributing factors to this tragic event; however, it was noted that Groves was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.
