Early Monday morning, the westbound lanes of Interstate 76 near the Interstate 70 junction in Wheat Ridge became the scene of disruption and delay after a three-vehicle crash involving a semitrailer. The semitrailer, according to KDVR, jackknifed on the road, leading to temporary closures starting at 6:45 a.m. between Sheridan Boulevard and the I-70 junction near Wadsworth Boulevard. The closure later extended to Federal Boulevard as emergency crews addressed the scene and a diesel spill.
While the injuries sustained in the crash were described as minor, the incident caused substantial congestion and delays, with traffic cameras capturing a gallery of emergency vehicles amidst the standstill. "Crews are also working to clean up a diesel fuel spill," a Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson informed KDVR, indicating that the repercussions of the accident were more than just traffic disruptions.
The Denver Post noted that Colorado State Patrol troopers responded to the crash at 6:44 a.m., and that the fuel spill was from the semitrailer's side tank. The total volume of the spill was not determined at the time of the reports, and an estimate for the reopening of the highway was not immediately available. The Denver Post also requested that any witnesses to the crash with untold accounts should reach out to the Colorado State Patrol dispatch.
As for the alternative routes, drivers were advised to seek other paths to circumvent the gridlock caused by the closure. The situation at Federal Boulevard, where another segment of westbound I-76 was closed for "safety concerns," contributed to these advisories, possibly delaying travelers for up to 25 minutes, as reported by the Denver Post. Meanwhile, CBS News Colorado pointed out that the crash was still under investigation, and while drivers were urged to avoid the area, the duration of the road closure remained uncertain as of the last updates.
