In the pre-dawn hours of Monday, chaos erupted on Northeast Loop 410 as a three-vehicle crash near Starcrest Drive pushed bystanders to desperate measures. According to reports from KSAT, several individuals involved in the incident, which occurred around 2:35 a.m., were compelled to leap from the highway to avoid the menace of oncoming traffic.
The initial cause of the collision remains to be clarified, but the aftermath forced an unexpected and harrowing decision upon those involved. Authorities informed that some sought to escape the scene by jumping over the barrier, possibly to quickly secure a refuge from further collisions. Two managed to land on the accessible part of the road below, while one person misjudged their jump and plunged into Salado Creek, according to the San Antonio Police Department.
News4SanAntonio, in their coverage of the incident, noted that one of the vehicles had overturned, prompting another driver to halt their journey and attempt a roadside rescue. Their article, found at News4SanAntonio, also mentioned that among the three people who jumped, one individual sustained injuries requiring hospital care.
This victim, a man whose leap resulted in an unintended fall into the creek below the overpass, was subsequently hospitalized with injuries that were thankfully deemed as non-life threatening. It’s a somber reminder of how quickly the tides of fortune can turn to preferentially select whom might suffer in the wake of a disaster. His condition is being closely monitored, serving as the sole reported casualty in an event that narrowly avoided a far grimmer outcome.
