A late-night argument inside an Inner Richmond business ended with five people stabbed and, weeks later, a 32-year-old San Francisco man booked into jail on a $1 million bond.

San Francisco police identified the suspect as Joncarlo Gutierrez and said investigators arrested him this week in connection with the late-October attack. Four of the five injured people were taken to the hospital, while a fifth was treated at the scene. Police described all of the injuries as non-life-threatening.

Police: Late-night dispute inside business turned into knife attack

Officers were called about 2:10 a.m. on Oct. 24 to reports of a fight on the 3900 block of Geary Boulevard, where they found several people hurt inside a business, according to ABC7. Police said a verbal dispute inside the venue escalated into a physical fight and that a suspect allegedly used a knife to assault multiple people. In the early hours after the incident, investigators urged anyone with information to reach out to the department’s tip line.

At the time, officers said no arrests had been made and that detectives were gathering surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses, as reported by ABC7. Authorities stressed they were looking for more details from anyone who had seen the altercation or left the area before police arrived.

Arrest follows weeks of investigation

After several weeks of work by investigators, plainclothes officers located Gutierrez in the area of Richland Avenue and Mission Street and took him into custody, arrest records reviewed by Patch show. Booking logs indicate his bail was set at $1 million, and police and court records say he was booked into a San Francisco jail just before midnight on Friday.

Charges and next hearing

Gutierrez faces one count of attempted murder, five counts of assault with a deadly weapon and two counts of mayhem, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. He is scheduled to appear in San Francisco Superior Court at 9 a.m. on Dec. 4 and remains held on that $1 million bond as the case moves forward.

Inner Richmond nightlife and safety concerns

The 3900 block of Geary sits in a dense stretch of late-night bars and restaurants, an area that often stays busy around closing time and where tempers can flare, according to SFist. That report noted the disturbance appeared to break out right around typical bar-closing hours, a timing that can make it harder for detectives to reconstruct what happened amid crowd noise and a rush of people heading out.

Investigators have again urged anyone who witnessed the fight or captured it on video to contact the SFPD tip line at 415-575-4444 or text TIP411, starting the message with SFPD, ABC7 notes. Court records show the investigation is ongoing and prosecutors will review the evidence ahead of the December hearing.
