
Pedro “Pete” Alvarez, head of the Texas Department of Transportation’s Pharr District, oversees the development and maintenance of highways across the Rio Grande Valley. His work focuses on improving safety and enhancing connectivity for communities throughout South Texas, ensuring roads serve both current and future needs.
As per the Texas Department of Transportation release, a native of McAllen, Alvarez returned to his hometown after completing his engineering studies, driven by a goal to use his expertise for the benefit of the region. One of his key career milestones was a major highway project in Mission, Texas, which significantly improved mobility and boosted local development.
With the region’s population expected to grow substantially by 2040, Alvarez continues to lead projects aimed at addressing congestion and strengthening infrastructure. His long-term plans emphasize building safe, efficient, and sustainable transportation systems that support economic growth and improve residents’ quality of life across the Rio Grande Valley.
