A tragic incident occurred in Montgomery County on Sunday afternoon when a single-vehicle collision claimed the life of a 69-year-old woman from Silver Spring. According to a statement obtained by the Montgomery County Department of Police, Laura Mae Martin died at the scene after her black Cadillac XT4 overturned in the area of Old Columbia Pike and Musgrove Road around 1:30 p.m.
The department's Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) is currently investigating the crash to determine why Martin, who was driving the vehicle, apparently lost control. The unit responded alongside 3rd District officers and Fire Rescue personnel, following the report of the collision. Martin's car, for reasons yet unidentified, veered across the northbound lane, hit a curb, took out two signs, and ended up upside down.
Martin was pronounced dead at the location, while an adult male passenger in the Cadillac was transported to a nearby hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening. The Montgomery County Police have not disclosed any additional information regarding the passenger's condition or identity.
No other vehicles were involved in the incident, which occurred on a stretch of roadway known for its busy traffic, especially on weekends. The CRU, tasked with piecing together the events leading up to the crash, has affixed its thorough gaze on the battered remnants of Martin’s Cadillac, but the investigation is anticipated to span several weeks, or possibly longer.
Anyone who can provide details about the circumstances surrounding the collision is encouraged to contact the Collision Reconstruction Unit at 240-773-6620, as stated in the Montgomery County Police's official press release, which can be viewed here.
