Springfield’s Firearms Investigation Unit (FIU), in collaboration with the Hampden County Sheriff’s Department, arrested five individuals at Gurdon Bill Park yesterday following community reports of open-air drug activity. According to a press release from the Springfield Police Department, detectives conducted surveillance and observed around two dozen suspected drug transactions over two days.

At about 1:15 p.m., detectives witnessed a suspected drug deal on Governor Street, stopped one individual, recovered crack cocaine, and released the person with a pending criminal complaint. A later incident led to a coordinated operation in the park’s encampment, where five people were detained. One suspect, Ernesto Cruzado-Torres, attempted to flee but was apprehended. Officers found crack cocaine in his possession and confirmed that he had four outstanding warrants.

The operation resulted in the seizure of an illegal rifle, approximately 48 Gabapentin pills, 2.6 grams of crack cocaine, and $287 in cash. The arrested individuals—45-year-old Sergio Hernandez, 42-year-old Jonathan Perez-Rodriguez, 30-year-old Carlos Suarez, and 40-year-old Amanda Farrell, all of Springfield—face multiple charges, including firearm offenses and drug distribution within a drug-free park zone.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue efforts to address illegal drug and firearm activity in the area.
