Last Wednesday marked the culmination of the St. Charles Parish Sheriff's Office's 2025 Citizens Academy with a graduation ceremony celebrated by participating community members. The ceremony capped a comprehensive look behind the scenes at the functions and operations of the sheriff’s department, particularly highlighting the Training and Special Services Divisions, as was reported in a St. Charles Parish Sheriff's Office post from the office.
During the final session before graduation enthusiasts got a chance to observe the tools and methods used by law enforcement for subduing suspects, including a Taser deployment and a pepper spray exposure where two cadets from the P.O.S.T. Academy were volunteers to demonstrate the effects of these devices, furthermore sessions with Virtual Reality Taser and firearm simulators demonstrated the role of emerging technologies in training officers to enhance their decision-making skills under duress, the Sheriff’s Office described.
The event also shone a light on the Special Services Division, integral to both the sheriff’s operations and the community at large, their responsibilities ranging from Crime Victim Assistance to the presence of School Resource Officers (SROs), not only ensuring safety within educational settings but also fostering constructive relationships with students to guide their future decisions, the department emphasized on the St. Charles Parish Sheriff's Office page.
Crime Victim Assistance Division's commitment was notably underscored as they tend to operate behind the scenes diligently contacting each reported victim to offer support resources, a practice, the Sheriff's Office noted, is about following up and checking on every individual impacted by crime, they are the unsung heroes of the division, rarely making their presence known outside their offices but playing a very crucial role within it.
With graduation now behind them, the Sheriff’s Office looks to the future for its next Citizens Academy, urging graduates to spread the word and stay tuned for updates on their social media outlets; they concluded the announcement with an invitation to the community for increased awareness and participation in law enforcement processes.
