The St. Johns County Public Library System is set to launch an enhanced version of its Food for Fines program, come November 9, offering community members a dual opportunity to clear their library fines and contribute to local causes. The program, which runs through December 21, allows patrons to both reduce their overdue fines and aid those in need within the St. Johns community.
As detailed by a announcement from the library system itself, individuals with overdue library fines can participate by donating unexpired, nonperishable food items, with each contribution knocking $2 off the amount they owe. These food donations will benefit the St. Johns County Health and Human Services Food Pantry, supporting local families facing food insecurity. In an alternative vein, patrons can opt to make a monetary contribution towards their fines, which will then be used to purchase bike lights for children and families, a new addition to this year's program, through the Firefighters for Families initiative.
"Since we first launched Food for Fines in 2009, the community has really gotten behind the program, showing incredible support year after year," said Debra Rhodes Gibson, St. Johns County Public Library System Director, in an official release on the St. Johns County website. "We’re happy to expand this partnership to contribute even more to our community, helping not only those facing food insecurity but also keeping local families safe through new initiatives like providing bike lights."
It is important to note that fees associated with lost or damaged library items will not be eligible for reduction under this program. Nonetheless, the food for fines initiative invites all community members to donate, regardless of whether they have outstanding library fines.
