A Strawberry Crest High School student was taken into custody for bringing a firearm and a knife onto the school's premises, reports the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office. The incident which prompted the arrest occurred yesterday, when the student, identified as 15-year-old Miguel Gallegos, was spotted with a vape pen after leaving the restroom. School officials, adhering to their safety protocol, initiated an administrative search.

In the midst of this procedure, Gallegos displayed uncooperative behavior, resulting in the intervention of an HCSO School Resource Deputy. The deputy's attempts to search Gallegos escalated when the student tried to take hold of deputy's agency-issued firearm, leading to his restraint in handcuffs. The subsequent search of Gallegos' backpack unearthed a loaded firearm, and further inspection recovered a knife.

Detailing the incident, Sheriff Chad Chronister emphasized the quick action taken by the deputy in charge. "Our deputy acted quickly to prevent any potential harm, and this case serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and reporting suspicious activity," Chronister stated, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office press release. "Let me be clear: bringing weapons onto school grounds is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. We encourage parents, students, and staff to work together to keep our schools safe."

Gallegos now faces multiple charges, including Possession of a Firearm on School Grounds, Possession of a Weapon on School Grounds, Minor in Possession of a Firearm, Resisting Without Violence, and Altering a Serial Number on a Firearm. The booking photo of Gallegos will be made public once it is available. While the investigation is ongoing, updates will be issued by the Public Affairs Office as they become available.
