A theft rocked the collectibles world in SoHo, where a suspect made off with more than $9,700 in baseball and Pokémon trading cards from none other than Tom Brady's CardVault, as reported by ABC7NY. In the gutsy daytime heist on Oct. 20, authorities allege that the individual, donned in a Yankees cap, skillfully circumvented a credit card denial at the store's machine, ultimately lifting cards estimated at a substantial $9,710 value.
The suspect, who has evaded capture, executed the sleight of hand at the memorabilia hub located at 244 Lafayette St., just before the noon hour, whereby after his credit card was declined he created an opportunity, maneuvering past the failed transaction prompts, police detailed in an account provided to PIX11. This store roots from a larger chain championed by the 7-time Super Bowl victor whose enterprise spans across several prime locations, including an upcoming outlet in the Mall of America in Minnesota.
Reflecting on this incident highlights the soaring value and desire for collectible cards, among which Pokémon card's voracious collector demand stands out, "It's incredible what's going on with Pokémon right now," Chris Costa, the co-founder of CardVault, described the current trend in the trading card realm in a statement to PIX11. These cards can attract figures close to a thousand dollars each, further underscoring the significant loss for the SoHo establishment.
Tom Brady's store opened its doors in SoHo just weeks before the larceny, quickly becoming a spot not only for memorabilia exchange but also for celebrity sightings; Karl Anthony Towns of the Knicks was one such star to appear at the grand opening on Oct. 8., and the NFL legend himself visited Ladder 20, cherishing times with firefighters, "Stay humble, stay hungry. Keep working our a—- off to keep delivering the best experience for everybody," Brady exhorted during the opening, an ethos now marred by the recent delinquent escapade, as per PIX11.
Police are on the hunt for the individual, last seen in a black baseball cap, a hooded sweatshirt, shorts, white socks, and sneakers, with a distinctive multicolored bag in possession. CardVault and the NYPD have not let up in the search for justice and have extended a public appeal for information leading to the suspect, offering contact through the Crime Stoppers Hotline.
